The basic objective of this study is to present and analyze as adequately as possible the economic conditions which prevail in the tourism markets of the Mediterranean region. Based on these we will attempt to draw conclusions regarding the relative development of the Greek tourism industry with respect to both its present state and its future tendencies.

Our work includes quantitative data and, to the extent that something like this is possible, qualitative elements. These, we hope, will allow for a more accurate comparison of the differences in the development of tourism and the various tourist policies between our country and each one of the countries we are going to examine. Our work covers, in addition to Greece of course, the following ten countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Croatia, Turkey and Cyprus. Each one of these countries, due to the particular type of tourist product it offers, is a serious competitor for the Greek tourism industry.

On this basis, we hope to expose the relative advantages and disadvantages of each country in the field of our examination. We also hope to draw some basic conclusions concerning what should be given attention to and, equally importantly, what should be avoided in the various tourist policies and the overall development of tourism in our own country. These will hopefully be used in order to formulate ideas and shape suggestions which could be used for a Greek tourism development strategy.

A basic characteristic feature which we sincerely hope will become evident from this work is the great similarities in the problems the various countries of this region have faced, and are still facing, in their tourism development. The policies adopted to resolve these problems can provide many useful insights for our country.
