The present report provides an overview of recent trends and short-term perspectives for the world economy, with particular emphasis on developments within the European Union.

The focus of the analysis and projections is on economic developments and perspectives for the economies of the European Monetary Union. At the same time, the report addresses the economic trends of the remaining European Union economies and includes a short reference to the new member countries.

As regards the wider international environment, the analysis focuses on the economic performance and perspectives for developed countries, such as the USA and Japan, while the trends in important emerging economies, like China, India and Russia, are also addressed. The report further analyzes selected international economic issues that significantly affect, or are expected to affect, world economic conditions, such as oil price trends and international trade imbalances.

The present report represents a revised and updated version of the “General Report” on the international economy prepared and presented by the authors at the autumn meeting of the Association of European Conjuncture Institutes (AIECE), held in Brussels in November 2005.

The analysis and projections provided are based on world economic and statistical data available until March 2006.
