The purpose of the research is to investigate the changes that occurred on the size and the structure of the employment of the telecommunications sector in Greece in the 1992 – 2000 period, as well as, the impact of the liberation of the telecommunications market on the employment of the sector. The liberation changed drastically the structure and the way the telecommunications market operated.

The collection of the data for the number of employees and the kind of jobs created by the telecommunications enterprises, was done by field research -through a questionnaire-, as well as, with other ways allowed by the existing statistical sources.

According to the findings, the number of employees on the telecommunications sector, in the 1992 – 2000 period, increased by 20%. Inspite of the fact that, in comparison to the particularly high rates of change of the number of enterprises and almost all of the other magnitudes that characterize the sector of telecommunications, this increase was not particularly high, it was however for times higher than the corresponding rate by which increased the total employment. In this respect telecommunications were from those sectors that contributed –with higher than the average rate- to the creation of new jobs.

However, in respect to the contribution of the sector to the total employment, the conclusion is that telecommunications is –and will remain- a small economic sector, since it is not expected to reach above 1%.
