No. 55. FYROM’S TRANSITION: FROM YUGOSLAVIA TO THE EUROPEAN UNION?

R. Panagiotou. 2008. | ISBN: 978-960-341-079-9

The main objective of this study is to analyse FYROM’s threefold transition by examining the most important developments in this process – the achievements, the challenges, the problems – and in doing so to contribute towards filling the gap in the literature on this subject. While the focus and central interest of this analysis is the economic dimension of FYROM’s transition, all the particularities and unique features which influence this country’s post-socialist, post-Yugoslav transition are taken into consideration. In addition to the examination of the transition process, the research will also focus on two important aspects of FYROM’s external relations, namely relations with Greece and the European Union (specifically the prospects for EU membership). Where appropriate, the study will attempt to evaluate various aspects of FYROM’s economic development in comparison to that of the other Balkan economies in transition.
