At the start of the meeting, the KEPE administration expressed its sincere condolences and deepest solidarity to the people of Nepal following the recent devastating natural disasters. During the meeting, the two institutions were presented and views were exchanged on possible avenues for academic and institutional cooperation, with the broader aim of strengthening relations between Greece and Nepal

On Friday, 8^th of May 2026, KEPE welcomed a five-member delegation from the Chinese research think tank Economics & Technology Research Institute (ETRI) of the China National Petroleum Company (CNPC).

The delegation consisted of Qian Xinkun, Executive Director (Head of Delegation), Zhang Yong, Deputy Chief Economist, Chief of Media and Communication, Lin Donglong, President Assistant, Chief of Scientific and Research Department, Chu Chengeng, Chief of Think Tank Media Center and Li Boyuan, Senior Engineer.

KEPE was represented by the Scientific Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of KEPE, Professor Panagiotis Petrakis, as well as KEPE Researchers Dr. Vassilis Lychnaras, Dr. Theodore Tsekeris, and Dr. Ersi Athanassiou.

The meeting took place upon request of the Chinese think tank and focused on the exchange of views regarding the Greek energy market, the recent geopolitical developments, the transition toward a low-carbon economy, and the prospects for possible cooperation between ETRI and KEPE. It was a highly productive discussion and both institutions agreed to establish a channel for regular exchange of views and information and conduct joint research on energy economics and policy issues.

Dr Panagiotou’s remarks focused on how the ongoing political and institutional erosion of democracy in the United States (which is evident on many fronts) is impacting Europe. The negative effect on Europe is apparent first and foremost in the turmoil that has been caused in practical terms: security (future of NATO, support for Ukraine), economics (tariffs), and politics (the US Administration’s continuous derision towards the European Union, the President’s admiration of autocrats globally) and much more. Moreover, in addition to the inevitable implications of what this narrative means for the future of the Euro-Atlantic alliance, this turmoil has exacerbated Europe’s own challenges regarding democratic backsliding and the rise of the far right on the Continent: the fact that the Trump Presidency is directly questioning the raison d’ etre of the EU, and is openly endorsing and supporting far right political parties in Europe (parties that are largely Eurosceptic, support and are supported by Russia, are against EU enlargement and are climate change deniers) can ultimately be considered an existential threat to Europe.
