The Greek economy, after more than a decade of profound crisis and its lasting repercussions, now finds itself at a critical juncture. On the one hand, there are strong indications of recovery. On the other, a series of dilemmas concerning the nature and direction of future growth have resurfaced. These dilemmas relate to issues such as the structure of the Greek economy, sectoral composition, dependence on imports, the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an increasingly competitive international environment, and the fair and sustainable distribution of income, among others.
This study examines these questions through a holistic perspective of the economic system. It seeks to highlight the interconnections between key macroeconomic categories within economic models, drawing extensively on quantitative methods.
The study is organized into three sections. Section A, authored by Vlasis Missos and George Bertzatos, investigates the relationship between the productive performance of SMEs and the broader macroeconomic environment. Section B, by Kostas Passas, assesses the role and significance of manufacturing within the macroeconomic structure of the Greek economy. In Section C, Nikos Rodousakis and George Soklis examine the inter-sectoral linkages between manufacturing and other sectors.
