studies 66 exof 200x294Initially planned as an extension to the Regional Analysis of Declared Incomes in Greece (volume 63 of the same series), this book examines the spatial distribution of male and female employment, unemployment and non-participation in Greece using both time-series and cross-sectional data. The former dataset is in the conventional aggregated form, allowing for the three aspects of economic involvement of the regional populations to move in different directions and at different speeds. However, the disaggregated nature of the latter dataset permits the juxtaposition of alternative spatial models, the estimation of a good number of spatial and non-spatial effects on the male and female employment, unemployment and non-participation equations, as well as the delineation of labor market areas of Greece. This type of analysis may be viewed as a novelty in the Greek labor economics literature. Overall, by treating the economy as a collection of communities and clusters of communities, and departing from the conventional amalgamation according to the inherited regional framework, the study offers a paradigm of how disaggregated data may be employed, how the econometric tools be used and the zones of distressed areas may be identified.
